Maggiolo dump threatens tourism industry
Bnamericas Published: Friday, January 14, 2005
The Dominican Republic will close its Maggiolo dump because fumes, smoke and odor from the 30-year-old facility are threatening the tourism industry in Puerto Plata city in the country's north. "The dump has grown tremendously in the last few years and has become a problem for guests at the hotels in Maimón, Cofresí and Costámbar," a tourism department spokesperson told BNamericas, elaborating on a report from Hoy Digital. "Hotel management has been working with the dump to control operations there, but it has become unmanageable. That is why on January 19, tourism secretary Félix Jiménez will announce the dump closure, and waste will be sent to a new sanitary landfill in a different part of the country," the spokesperson said. "That should be done in about a year," he added. The dump regularly incinerates waste and the smoke enters hotel buildings, often causing respiratory problems for hotel workers and guests at the multi-million dollar resorts built with Austrian, Canadian and US investment. There were even times when the hotels had to be evacuated due to the intense smoke, the paper reported. Further, the runoff from the odorous open-air dump finds its way into underground water systems that empty into the Atlantic, the paper added.
