Parana to tackle solid waste problem

Brazilian state Parana's environment and water resources department kicks off a 12.7mn reais (US$4.41mn) program to tackle the problem of solid waste Tuesday (Nov.11), the state government reported. The program, dubbed "Desperdicio Zero," aims to reduce the volume of solid waste produced in Parana by 30% in three years, and eliminate open-air dumps that exist in 188 of Parana's 399 municipalities. According to state law 12.493, all municipalities must have identified a final disposal area by December 3, and have until December of next year to build the necessary infrastructure.
