Rio Grande do Sul attracts US$320mn in Proinfa plans

Brazil's Rio Grande do Sul state has attracted 20 wind, biomass and small-scale hydro power projects to generate 841MW, with forecast investment of US$320mn for the federal government's alternative power generation program Proinfa, the state government news service said. At the end of the month the federal government will announce the qualified projects to generate 1,100MW from wind, biomass and small-scale hydro projects. Wind-powered projects in Rio Grande do Sul totaled 592MW, over the 220MW quota for the state. Small-scale hydroelectric projects summed up to 232MW, over the state's 165MW quota. There was only one biomass project submitted for Proinfa in Rio Grande do Sul, while the state's quota was 165MW. The state is in talks with the federal government to raise its wind power generation quota by 100MW to accommodate some of the oldest projects in the state.
