Chile's national registry has named the seven companies that will participate in the tender for a new system for providing ID and travel documents, as well as related services, the deputy director of studies and development at the national registry, Rodrigo Seisdedos, said during the opening of bid proposals. The companies that met all requirements to participate in the process are Sonda, Coasin, Sagem, Indra, BundesDruckerei, Sice SA in alliance with Quintec, and Siemens. Through the tender, the national registry plans to provide new ID cards with an embedded contactless chip, which will include biometric information. The chip will also enable digital signatures and authentication. The winner of the tender will also provide biometric electronic passports, including a contactless chip that will guarantee security through encrypting, and comply with international interoperability standards in verifying the authenticity of the passport. Each of the seven companies handed over a US$500,000 guarantee, while the winner of the tender will need to offer a guarantee just over US$8mn. Provision of the current identification system was awarded in 2001 to Chilean IT firm Sonda for an eight-year period, and was renewed until August 28, 2010. The new 10-year contract is estimated to be worth some 76.4bn pesos (US$136mn), varying according to the number of valid documents issued. The winner of the tender will be announced on December 18.
