América Móvil 'well prepared' for 5G
América Móvil is well prepared for the advent of 5G high speed mobile connectivity in the coming years as it has built thousands of kilometers of fiber optics and increased the number of base stations and datacenters it operates, the company said in a presentation.
Between 2010 and 2018, the Mexican telco giant built 527,000km of fiber optics for a total of 829,000km, while it also built 139,000 base stations for a total of 207,000, it added.
"We are well prepared for the introduction of 5G networks in the coming years, having built out our fiber networks and modernized our mobile and transmission platforms," the company said. "5G is for us a natural evolution of our top-of-the-line networks," the company said.
América Móvil, which claims to be the largest telecommunications company outside of China and India by total accesses, has also recently engaged in acquisitions across Latin America, such as Nextel in Brazil and Telefónica's operations in Guatemala and El Salvador, which have allowed it to increase its available mobile spectrum.
TheBrazilian acquisition gave the company 35MHz of spectrum plus 20MHz in São Paulo and 30MHz in Rio de Janeiro, while the El Salvador assets gave the telco an additional 55MHz. Both of those acquisitions are expected to close by September, it said.
The company, controlled by Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim, suffered a setback regarding the El Salvador acquisition after the country's competition authority this month rejected its application to consolidate the assets, but América Móvil has said it will refile the paperwork.
The Guatemala purchase, closed in January, added 80MHz of spectrum to its wireless capacity, it added.
América Móvil has had an US$8bn/y long-term capex target since 2016, lower that the around US$10bn in annual investments it was making before that, so cash flow has improved and it was able to reduce debt levels – a common complaint among investors – to 1.9 times Ebitda as of end-2018.
