Argentina energy watch: Hydrogen, Vaca Muerta, public consultation, rural solar

Bnamericas Published: Friday, November 11, 2022

Argentina’s government will send a green hydrogen bill to congress in the “coming weeks.”

The country – with abundant renewables resources, hydrocarbons industry experience and deepwater ports – must turn its advantages into a competitive edge, federal energy chief Flavia Royón said during a visit to Mendoza province, according to local media.

A green hydrogen production complex, to be developed in stages and involving outlay of US$8.4bn, was announced in Argentina last year. Planned for Río Negro province, the project is in the prefeasibility phase. A separate project is planned for Tierra del Fuego province

In Latin America, Chile, Colombia, Brazil and Uruguay are the most advanced along the green hydrogen highway.

Ambassadors from European countries said Argentine hydrocarbons province Neuquén could be an important medium and long-term partner, the jurisdiction’s cabinet chief, Sebastián González said.

Companies from France and Germany, among other European countries, already operate in the province.

González, in a statement issued by Neuquén, said Europe’s shift away from Russian hydrocarbons presented an opportunity for Argentina as a potential supplier.

Output from the Neuquén basin has been climbing, with future gas and oil growth linked to completion of a major gas transport pipeline and a new oil duct.

A decision on two gas liquefaction projects, which would enable Argentina to tap European markets, could be made next year.

Chilean power firm AES Andes resumed electric power trade with Argentina, via the only transmission line linking the countries. A potential second link is in the environmental evaluation phase in Chile.

Argentina’s federal energy department awarded solar PV installation work contracts under the Permer program for renewable energy in rural areas.
