Argentina to invest US$4.7bn in transport infra next year
Argentina's transport ministry will invest a total of 180bn pesos (US$4.7bn) in infrastructure projects next year, which include PPP initiatives and the continuation of a number of ongoing projects.
Some of the major projects to be executed in 2019 include 6,000km of new roads across the country, which will be tendered as part of the government's US$30bn PPP program, improvements to the north and west access roads of capital Buenos Aires and the completion of various other projects, the ministry said in a release.
In the air transport area, new airports will be built for the cities of Comodoro Rivadavia (Chubut province), Iguazú (Misiones) and Jujuy, while expansion works will be carried at Buenos Aires' Ezeiza airport, as well as the terminals serving Mar del Plata (Buenos Aires province), Mendoza, Córdoba, San Juan La Rioja and El Palomar (Buenos Aires).
In urban transport, four new BRT corridors will be completed, three in capital Buenos Aires and another in Neuquén province. Meanwhile, 100km of streets used by public transport will be repaved.
In the rail sector, five new underpasses will be completed and improvements will be carried at 45 stations. Meanwhile, improvements will be also carried out on the Mitre, Belgrano Sur and San Martín railways.
Next year will also see the start of the Norpatagonico railway, a US$550mn PPP project that entails a 665km rail link connecting the Vaca Muerta shale formation in Neuquén province with the port of Bahia Blanca in Buenos Aires province.
It should be noted that earlier this year, transport minister Guillermo Dietrich said that the investments outlined for 2018 were 131bn pesos, but due to the depreciation of the Argentine peso, the amount announced for 2019 is lower when converted to USD (US$4.7bn in 2019 versus US$6.7bn for 2018).
WORKS FOR 2018
The transport ministry also listed the projects that will be finished before the end of this year, which include one of the stretches of the Pilar-Pergamino highway, 600km of rail lines on the Belgrano Cargas railway, the Morón BRT corridor, a new cargo terminal at Ezeiza, the beltways for the cities of Rosario and Córdoba, nine new train stations and the expansion of the Storni and Piedra Buena ports in Chubut province, among other works.
