At a glance: Argentina's internet connections

Argentina ended the third quarter with 7.9mn fixed internet accesses, up 1.5% from a year earlier, according to statistics office Indec.

Residential connections accounted for 95% at 7.5mn and 1.9% higher.

Meanwhile, corporate connections continue to decline since the pandemic, with a 4.7% drop to 398,000.

Indec does not offer details about the type of connections or internet speed. Regulator Enacom has not updated figures for the telecommunications market since the first quarter.

Mobile accesses rose 8.9% compared to the same time last year to 36.1mn, according to Indec.

Residential mobile accesses increased 9% to 32.4mn and corporate mobile accesses totaled 3.68mn, up 7.8%.

Some 96% of residential internet accesses (including fixed and mobile) were provided by companies that have more than 1mn accesses, while 2.9% correspond to companies that provide between 30,000 and 1mn accesses.

The remaining 1% was distributed among companies that provide less than 30,000 accesses.

Telecom Argentina is the main fixed broadband operator with 4.6mn accesses, according to its latest earnings report. It is followed by Movistar and Telecentro. Other operators are Claro, Supercanal and iPlan.

DirecTV, meanwhile, is setting out on the path to becoming a provider of fixed broadband services through agreements with neutral network providers.

In the mobile market, Movistar, Claro and Personal (Telecom Argentina) share the number of lines almost equally.
