At a glance: El Salvador's US$85mn connectivity plan

El Salvador plans to connect 2,200 public places under a US$85mn connectivity plan, mainly financed by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

The social connectivity program was approved in 2021, but the general acquisition announcement has only now been published.

The IDB funds will be used for the acquisition of goods, services and consulting. South Korea’s infrastructure co-financing facility for Latin America and the Caribbean (KIF) will also provide funds.

Works involve expanding and equipping the trunk and aggregation network, with connections to the access network of schools and health centers, among others. Wiring and installation of equipment will be carried out in connected public places.

The second component relates to digital skills, as 63,000 citizens are expected to access training modules. According to the program’s loan proposal, 1,865 educational institutions and 340 health units will be connected, benefiting nearly 600,000 citizens.

Indirectly, 200,000 homes are estimated to benefit from better connectivity due to the entry of new operators.

The first program report defines goals for 2027. Overall access is expected to increase and the figures for connected educational centers to rise from 34% to 67% and for health centers from 25% to 48%.

The specific procurement announcements for the contracts will be published on procurement site Comprasal.
