AWS to launch cloud infra in Argentina, Chile and Colombia in 2022
Amazon Web Services (AWS) will launch so-called local zones of its cloud infrastructure in Argentina, Chile and Colombia in 2022, Amazon CTO Werner Vogels said.
The launches are part of 30 new such zones to be made available internationally next year, the company said in its Re:Invent conference this week.
Brazil – which hosts AWS’s only Latin America cloud region to date – is also on the list.
AWS's local zones are a type of infra deployment that places AWS computing, storage, database and other select services closer to individuals, industry and IT centers, usually where there is no AWS region availability.
A cloud region represents a cluster of availability zones (datacenters). At present, AWS global cloud infra spans 81 availability zones in 25 regions. AWS’s Brazil cloud region was opened in 2011.
AWS also has 17 local zones in the United States.
The company had previously announced plans to launch 27 more availability zones and launch nine new cloud regions globally – but none in Latin America.
OUTPOSTS
In addition to the new local zones, AWS announced the expansion in Latin America of another type of cloud infrastructure, called outposts.
AWS outposts are fully managed computing and storage racks, built with hardware developed by the company that enable customers to perform computing and storage tasks on-premise.
With it, companies can run certain AWS services locally and connect to broader services available in the nearest AWS region.
During the event, AWS said outposts will now be shipped and installed at datacenters and on-premise locations in Costa Rica and Ecuador, in addition to Morocco, Nigeria and Vietnam.
