Bolivian mining exports rise on price gains
Bolivia's mining export revenue jumped 31.9% year-on-year to US$697mn through April due to higher metals prices and the restart of one of state mining company Comibol's smelters.
Exports of concentrates led by zinc, lead, silver and gold rose from US$528mn a year earlier, the Andean country's national statistics institute said in a statement.
Zinc exports soared 59% to US$394mn in the quarter, while silver was little changed from US$191mn and lead rose by half to US$75.9mn, according to the institute.
Copper rose 19.2% to US$10.1mn, while gold plunged 41.3% to US$4.2mn. Peru is clamping down on illegal gold miners who smuggle their output through neighboring Bolivia.
Tungsten climbed 3.8% to US$4.8mn, while antimony was little changed at US$1.1mn. Tin concentrates tumbled 77.3% to US$1mn, the agency said.
Refined gold exports, which are reported separately, slid 0.7% to US$244mn, while refined tin gained 20.6% to US$105mn, according to the agency. Refined silver rose 20.4% to US$34.4mn and refined antimony nearly doubled to US$6.1mn, the agency said. Copper cathodes more than tripled to US$4.3mn.
Comibol restarted its Karachipampa silver-lead smelter in December after completing a year long repair of its Kivcet blast furnace, which was damaged by an explosion. The company made its first shipment since November 2015 to trader Trafigura Beheer in February.
Bolivia's total exports climbed 6.9% to US$2.35bn during the first four months from US$2.20bn a year earlier. Crude oil and natural gas sales, which totaled US$759mn, accounted for about a third of the total.
