Braskem finances bioplastics research

Bnamericas
Brazilian petrochemical firm Braskem (NYSE: BAK) announced plans to finance research at São Paulo state university (UNESP) into the production of biodegradable plastics from alternative sources, including residues from the sugarcane and dairy product industries. The material produced could be used to produce bioplastics for various products, including food, drug and cosmetics packaging, as well as capsules for medicine and orthopedic implants in the biomedical industry, Braskem said in a statement. The production process for polylactic acid (PLA) should maintain the compound's biodegradability, the firm added. According to the researchers, their process is cheaper than those currently being developed in the US and Belgium, which obtain PLA from corn starch and beet sugar respectively.
