Brazil advances with US$780mn highway concession
Brazil’s infrastructure ministry approved studies from state-run firm Infra for the planned concession of the BR-262 highway.
The 439km highway runs between the cities of Betim and Uberaba, in Minas Gerais state.
The concession is expected to generate capex of 4.10bn reais (US$780mn) and 4.08bn reais in opex during the contract’s 30 years, Infra said in a statement.
Planned works include construction and widening of lanes, building pedestrian walkways, as well as roundabouts and interchanges.
A result of the merger of planning and logistics firm EPL and rail company Valec, Infra started operations earlier this month and it will help the federal government structure transport projects.
The studies for BR-262 will now enter the public consultation stage, which will be overseen by land transport regulator ANTT.
The concession contract was initially auctioned in 2013 but the concessionaire returned the concession to the government in 2017 due to problems with making the required investments.
