Brazil approves 'leftover' spectrum auction terms

Brazilian telecom regulator Anatel approved the terms of an auction to tender 'leftover' blocks of spectrum in the 1.8GHz, 1.9GHz and 2.5GHz bands.

The approval comes after a public consultation process that received 98 contributions. Previously considered in the bidding, the 3.5GHz band was left out of the last auction as its use could interfere with free-to-air TV.

The radiofrequencies will be used for the expansion of mobile telephony, broadband and radio taxi service coverage.

Brazil's audit court TCU has 15 days to go through the details of the bidding terms and give it a green light for the minimum price to be disclosed, likely in November. The auction is expected to be held in December.

Frequency lots will be available also on a municipal-level in order to encourage the participation of small- and medium-sized telecom providers, Anatel said.

All winners will receive licenses for 15 years, with the opportunity to renew for another 15.
