Brazil launches program to modernize highways
Brazil’s infrastructure ministry published in the official gazette a program to modernize federal highways, which will be the basis for a federal policy on roads regarding safety and technology.
“The idea is to reduce the number of accidents, improve the management of the ministry and the integration between [highways regulator] ANTT and [the department responsible for maintenance of public highways] DNIT, and assure operations with greater logistical efficiency,” said minister Tarcisio Gomes de Freitas in a release.
“The program will be key to assure the infrastructure part in the resumption of economic growth,” he said.
The program is aimed at both public and concession highways.
Measures to improve processes, rules and regulatory frameworks will be incorporated into the program's portfolio of projects.
The program looks to promote safety and logistical efficiency through investments in new signage, road monitoring, connectivity (Wi-Fi and cell phone coverage on highways), and free flow toll booths, among others.
