Brazil opens consultation on cloud procurement
Brazil’s economy ministry has launched a consultation on the draft terms to contract an integrator of cloud platforms from multiple providers
The consultation is for the future hiring of managed cloud computing services under the multi-cloud broker (integrator) model, which includes the conception, project, provisioning, configuration, migration, support, maintenance and management of service topologies from two or more public cloud providers, such as Microsoft Azure, AWS and Google Cloud.
Companies and individuals will be able to comment on the model for contracting the broker.
"It is important, at this time, to talk both to public managers and to the IT market to develop the bidding process in a transparent and efficient way", said the ministry’s secretary of management, Cristiano Heckert.
The ministry found that federal public administration agencies intend to invest nearly 700mn reais (US$137mn) in different cloud services and sees that centralized acquisition brings gains in scale and reduces total costs, among other benefits.
Investments include contract renewal, new hires and projects for the acquisition of servers/storage.
The public consultation on the tender terms is open for comment until June 26. The government expects to conduct the tender later this year.
This is the second major move by the federal government to migrate its infrastructure to the cloud with a centralized purchase.
The first contract was won by Embratel, which was hired as a broker mostly for AWS cloud.
AWS was also the provider chosen by federal data processing service Serpro, Brazil’s largest state-owned technology company.
Serpro provides important systems to the federal government, such as income tax processing, and is on the privatization list of the ministry of economy.
