Brazil to launch irrigation concession tender
Brazil is pushing ahead with its irrigation concessions agenda.
“Today, irrigated areas in Brazil total 7Mha, but there is potential for more than 30Mha," regional development minister Daniel Ferreira said in a press release. "There are studies by the World Bank that demonstrate that municipalities with irrigation have superior performance in a series of socioeconomic indicators," he added.
The government aims to offer six public irrigation projects and one hydro-agricultural project, all of which are part of the Investment Partnerships Program (PPI).
The projects are Tabuleiros Litorâneos and Platôs de Guadalupe, in Piauí state; Tabuleiros de São Bernardo, in Maranhão; Chapada do Apodi, in Rio Grande do Norte; Baixo Acaraú, in Ceará; Vale do Iuiú, in Bahia; and Vale do Jequitaí, in Minas Gerais state.
The notice for Tabuleiros de São Bernardo, Tabuleiros Litorâneos and Platôs de Guadalupe, Baixo Acaraúm and Chapada do Apodi will be published this week.
Earlier this month, investment fund BRLT 210 Fundos de Investimento won the concession to expand irrigation areas in Bahia state. The fund was the sole bidder and offered 83.1mn reais (US$16mn) for the Baixio de Irecê project, expected to generate 1.1bn reais in investments.
