Brazil to provide over US$250mn for infra, sanitation projects in Belém
The Brazilian government will provide up to 1.3bn reais (US$255mn) for infrastructure and sewage projects in Pará state capital Belém.
The funds will be made available via hydroelectric dam operator Itaipu Binacional in preparation for the UN's COP30 climate conference, which will take place in the city in November next year.
Itaipu Binacional is operated jointly by Brazil and Paraguay.
The federal government and the Pará and Belém authorities are now focusing on several initiatives to improve the infrastructure of the city, which is considered the gateway to the Amazon rainforest.
COP30 will take place less than a year before the next presidential election, to be held in October 2026, and President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is expected to use the event to show his administration’s advances in combating climate change.
