Brazil's steel, transport sectors present joint proposal to renew truck fleet

Bnamericas Published: Tuesday, November 26, 2013

Brazil's steel and transport sector representatives have presented to the development, industry and foreign trade ministry a joint proposal for a national fleet renewal program.

The program's first stage will be devoted to modernizing the domestic fleet of trucks. Currently, Brazil's truck fleet has about 200,000 truckers driving vehicles with over 30 years of use, national steel association IABr said in a release.

"The program will directly impact the safety of national roads and its air quality, important pillars of the proposal. Additionally, the new trucks would save 5bn reais (US$2.2bn) in diesel imports over a 10-year period," IABr said.

According to the association, old vehicles will undergo a recycling process for the proper disposal of components such as steel, iron and liquid waste.

"The national fleet renewal program provides for the replacement of approximately 30,000 vehicles per year over 10 years."

Among the organizations that took part in the proposal are scrap iron organization Sindinesfa, ABC metallurgical workers union, local car manufacturing association Anfavea, national transport federation CNT and vehicle dealership federation Fenabrave.
