Chile approves US$535mn solar project

Environmental authorities in Chile's Antofagasta region (II) approved the US$535mn, 446MW Elena photovoltaic solar project planned by Spain's Ibereólica.

The project entails two solar parks, each with capacity of 223MW, which will connect to the northern SING power grid via an 18.6km, 220kV transmission line.

Ibereólica, one of the winners in Chile's latest national energy auction for power distributors, is also developing the 115MW Cabo Leones, 204MW Cabo Leones II and 136.5MW Cabo Leones III wind farms in Atacama region (III).

Environmental approval of Cabo Leones III is pending.
