Chile telco Gtd opens Tier III datacenter in Puerto Montt
Chilean telco Gtd opened a Tier III datacenter in Puerto Montt, some 1,000km south of capital Santiago, a facility that is expected to boost local industries including salmon farming and tourism.
The datacenter required initial investment of US$5mn. By leveraging emerging technologies including internet of things (IoT) and big data, the datacenter is expected to help salmon farmers anticipate potential escapes from cages and store critical data securely.
Attending the launch, Pamela Gidi, head of telecoms regulator Subtel, underscored the importance of this and another project that Gtd announced last September – to build a 3,500km submarine fiber optic cable linking the country's north and south and doubling installed capacity.
The cable would complement Chile's flagship telecoms infrastructure project – the Fibra Óptica Austral (FOA) submarine fiber cable, which was awarded to a consortium comprising Huawei Marine and local telco CTR in October 2017.
Gtd's CEO Juan Manuel Casanova said the datacenter was 100% financed with local capital and will ensure that clients in the southern part of the country have access to the same quality of service as clients in "Santiago, Medellín [Colombia] or Lima," where Gtd also has operations.
Gtd now has six Tier III centers – three in Santiago, one in Puerto Montt and one each in Medellín and Lima.
The company operates in southern Chile through its Telefónica del Sur unit.
Chile hosts datacenters from Google, Entel, Sonda and Telefónica and is seen as an attractive destination given its stable economy and cheap energy prices. Amazon Web Services has indicated it may build a datacenter in Chile.
In December, US communications and IT services giant CenturyLink added a new modular unit to its Tier III Santiago datacenter.
