Chile's EFE submits EIA for rail line improvements
Chile’s state rail firm EFE submitted an environmental impact assessment (EIA) to improve the 20.9km Alameda-Nos service, which carried 22.3mn passengers last year.
The US$92.8mn project involves improvements to the Blanco, Maestranza and Freire stations, a new parking lot for buses at San Bernardo station south of Santiago, construction of an emergency train storage yard near Alameda station in the center of the capital and reinforcing the security fencing along the entire route, the EIA states.
The fencing was damaged during the social unrest that rocked Chile last year, when protesters blocked the line.
EFE estimates that work will begin in 2022 and finish in 2029.
