Chinese firm lands Panama power transmission project

Panama’s state power transmission company Etesa has awarded the 55km, 230kV Mata de Nance-Frontera transmission line project in Chiriquí province.

The winner was China CAMC Engineering with an offer of US$35.4mn.

The China National Machinery Industry subsidiary was the sole bidder and will have 540 days to complete the work.

“With the construction of this project, it will be possible to transmit the entire generation of hydroelectric and solar plants in operation and under construction in the Progreso area, such as Bajo Mina (56MW) and Baitún (88MW), in addition to the hydroelectric plants connected to the Boquerón 3 substation, which can total approximately 100MW and at the same time will strengthen the exchange capacity with the Costa Rican electrical system,” according to Etesa.

The call was issued in September when tenders for the GIS Burunga substation and the addition of a transformer at the Boquerón III substation were launched.

Etesa also has procurement underway to overhaul substations Santa Rita and Sabanitas and revamp the Veladero-Panamá line.
