Claro extends AMX-1 submarine cable to Costa Rica

Bnamericas Published: Wednesday, November 30, 2022

Claro Costa Rica has invested US$500mn to extend the AMX-1 submarine cable to the country and build a landing station in Limón.

This is the second exit that Claro owner América Móvil has inaugurated in a year, after extending the submarine cable to the Colombian island of San Andrés in 2021.

The AMX-1 cable is 17,500km long and connects Colombia with Mexico, Guatemala, the US, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Brazil and now Costa Rica. It has a capacity of 85Tbps, according to information published by local newspaper La República.

"Through this work, Costa Rica is positioned within the Central American isthmus as the country with the second most connections to submarine cables and it positions Claro as the leading operator in fiber optics by offering an increase in data traffic capacity," Marcelo Mouzo, country director of Claro Costa Rica, was quoted as saying by the daily.

Claro is the third biggest mobile operator in Costa Rica with 16.7% of prepaid subscriptions and 23.7% of prepaid lines, according to figures from the regulator Sutel at the end of 2021. In both cases it is surpassed by Movistar (now Liberty) and Grupo ICE.
