Claro to invest US$25mn next year

Uruguayan mobile telephony operator Claro expects total investments next year to amount to US$25mn, down from the US$30mn budgeted for 2012, local press reported. According to the report, capex in 2013 will be mainly oriented toward the strengthening of the operator's networks. Claro will also expand network infrastructure in certain areas in the provinces. Other operators in the local market are state-run telco Antel and Movistar, owned by Spain's Telefónica (NYSE: TEF). Uruguay ended the second quarter of the year with 4.82mn mobile telephony subscribers, up from 4.59mn at end-June 2011, according to telecoms watchdog Ursec's latest connectivity report. According to this report, Claro ended the second quarter with 771,206 subscribers in the country, representing a market share of 16%. According to Ursec's previous reports, Claro's market share remained stable over the 12-month period ended June 2012. Claro Uruguay is fully owned by Mexican telecoms giant América Móvil (NYSE: AMX).
