Marubeni can take part in new Codelco desal plant tender
A consortium led by Japan's Marubeni that won a contract to build a US$1bn desalination plant for Codelco will be able to participate in the new process despite the Chilean state copper miner's decision to scrap the original tender.
Codelco said on Friday that it had identified opportunities to reformulate the project and the new tender process will take two years.
“The new process could start in three months and Marubeni can participate again,” the miner told BNamericas. The other members of the consortium are Transelec and Techint.
Among the changes that Codelco plans is to include all the company's facilities in Calama in the areas to be supplied by the plant, which originally was only to supply the Chuquicamata, Radomiro Tomic and Ministro Hales (pictured) mines.
The plant was to have initial capacity of 840l/s, with potential to reach 1,956l/s, and operations were previously set to start in 2022. Codelco has not provided further details about the changes.
The plant was designed to reduce water consumption costs by 35% and become the country's second largest desalination facility, behind the US$3.4bn Escondida plant.
Budget cut
Last month, Codelco CEO Octavio Araneda announced an US$8bn capex cut over the next 10 years by simplifying project designs and reinforcing maintenance and supply operations. The budget cut represents 20% of the company’s project portfolio, but Araneda said there were no plans to halt any of what Codelco calls its structural projects.
“Codelco’s future depends on finishing the structural projects on time and at lower costs. Without them, our production will fall significantly, and we will stop contributing to the country,” Araneda told reporters at the time.
