Credit Suisse creates advisory area for Brazil privatizations

Swiss investment bank Credit Suisse has created an advisory area to work with the Brazilian government in its privatization program and also to help the authorities structure infrastructure concessions.

Two executives in Brazil are working full time on elaborating privatization models to support the government's plans, Bruno Fontana, head of Credit Suisse's investment banking area told BNamericas.

The administration of business-friendly President Jair Bolsonaro is engaged in the sale of a series of assets belonging to state-run companies, including subsidiaries of federal banking institutions Banco do Brasil and Caixa, along with several concessions for infrastructure projects.

"Our approach with the government has a collaborative bias. We worked on privatization processes in other nations as advisers to governments and investors, and we want to explore this know how to collaborate with the Brazilian government," said Fontana.

Fontana said the options to undertake a privatization include both IPOs and the direct sale of stakes depending on each state-owned company.

Infrastructure concessions is an area that Credit Suisse is also targeting.

"The recent auction of regional airports showed that investors have a strong interest in assets in Brazil and we want to collaborate to fuel this process," Fontana said.

Furthermore, capital markets financing and project finance are areas where Credit Suisse sees attractive business opportunities today in Brazil.

"With the reduction of [state-run development bank] BNDES' role, the capital markets in Brazil and across the globe emerge as an interesting funding option and we are ready to structure operations through the capital markets," said Fontana.
