Ecuador's Esmeraldas refinery attracts interest of 4 large companies
A consortium of four major companies, led by US firm KBR, is interested in operating the Esmeraldas oil refinery, the biggest in Ecuador, which was put out to tender in September.
"It is a first level consortium, in which KBR would be the construction company, the refinery operators would be Hyundai and Aramco, and Fluor would take care of the technical licenses," a source close to the process told BNamericas.
The source added that in the next few days 14 technicians from the consortium will visit the plant and the Ecuadoran government expects the interest to result in a bid.
Under the official schedule, bids will be received on December 22 and the contract awarded next year.
The winning company that will operate and manage the refinery for a 25-year term will have to invest around US$2.4bn in upgrades, construction of a waste-to-clean product conversion line and ensuring production of Euro 5 quality derivatives.
The Esmeraldas refinery has processing capacity of 110,000b/d.
