Entel expands D2C in Chile and prepares launch in Peru
Entel expanded its direct to cell satellite service direct to cell (D2C) in Chile and is preparing a new launch in Peru, advancing connectivity in remote areas through direct access to mobile applications.
Previously reserved only for SMS, Starlink’s direct-to-device satellite connectivity now allows the use of applications such as WhatsApp, Google Maps, AccuWeather and X, with new compatible applications to be progressively added.
Chile is the first country in Latin America to enable satellite-to-cell coverage for the use of applications and the seventh worldwide. The first Starlink Mobile partner operators in Mexico and Costa Rica are expected to be announced soon.
"This service will be available to our Entel Peru customers in the coming days, where it represents a real change in people's lives, given that the areas without terrestrial mobile network coverage are much larger than in Chile", said Antonio Büchi, CEO of Entel, in a press release.
Entel launched the D2C service in Chile in November and subsequently a regulatory sandbox was approved for its implementation in Peru, where the company already offers satellite connectivity for SMS.
The Starlink service in Chile enables connectivity in practically all continental and island territory from 58° south latitude, including Rapa Nui and Juan Fernández, and uses a network of 650 satellites with direct-to-device capability.
The service is enabled for customers who have compatible devices and have roaming and VoLTE activated.
