Esso targets Q4 for new Guyana well campaign

A 12-well exploration and appraisal drilling campaign at Guyana offshore block Canje is penciled in to begin in the fourth quarter of this year.

That is according to an updated project summary filed by Esso Exploration and Production Guyana (EEPGL) with the country’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as part of an application for environmental authorization.

The ExxonMobil subsidiary is the operator of the deepwater acreage, and the other partners are JHI Associates, Mid-Atlantic Oil & Gas and Total E&P Guyana.

“If discoveries are made, well test(s) may be performed. Conclusion of the proposed drilling campaign is expected by first quarter 2025,” the document states.

Canje is 200km off the coast and borders the Stabroek and Kaieteur blocks.

EEPGL said that the wells may be drilled by any of the six drill ships it has in Guyana or other rigs.

The EPA said “the project will not significantly affect the environment and is therefore, exempt from the requirement of an environmental impact assessment [EIA]” but that an environmental assessment and management plan will be required.

The EPA also has opened a 30-day consultation to submit appeals against the decision that an EIA is not required.
