Guatemala moving forward with Chimaltenango bypass

The Guatemalan congress approved Wednesday a bill that authorizes the expropriation of land for the completion of the delayed 15.3km Chimaltenango bypass.
The bill establishes the procedure to decide the compensation to be paid, congress said in a release.
The project is included in the portfolio of the communications, infrastructure and housing ministry (CIV) and requires 313mn quetzales (US$40.7mn).
The decree is set to become effective 15 days from its publication in the official gazette.
According to state news agency AGN, CIV will then have 30 days to negotiate with the owners of the land. If unsuccessful, an appraisal can be made to determine the price to be paid.
Construction of the bypass began in 2014 and is currently 82% complete.
Work, which is in the hands of local company CONASA, was halted for a few months due to problems securing rights-of-ways. Once completed, the bypass will reduce travel times from 60 to 15 minutes.
