Honduras gets ready to launch 3 hospital tenders

Bnamericas

The Honduran government will launch tenders at the end of this month to build three hospitals in the eastern and western parts of the country.

The hospitals will be located in the departments of Santa Bárbara, Ocotepeque and Salamá, and be financed with funds from the Spanish government.

The construction of these and five other hospitals will be completed by the end of President Xiomara Castro’s administration – in January of 2026, said health minister José Manuel Matheu.

“There’s no other country like ours in Latin America that builds eight hospitals in a single presidential period, it’s a big commitment that we will honor,” local daily El Heraldo reported Matheu as saying.

The government will also build several maternity wards around the country, he said.

“The tender processes for all of them will start at the end of June. The construction of the first maternity wards will begin in August, which will practically be like small hospitals,” said Matheu.

On June 13, the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (Aecid) announced it would increase the loan to build the three hospitals from 70mn euros (US$76.4mn) – agreed during Castro’s February visit to Spain – to 75mn euros.

The decision came after pre-construction studies showed that the Santa Bárbara hospital would have to be larger than initially planned.

The other five regional hospitals will be built with funds provided by South Korea and Japan.
