ICE encounters opposition from private generators to sign power purchase contracts

Since 2022, ICE has promoted a series of negotiation tables with private electricity generators -with plants built and without a contract- in the search for agreements that provide the dispatch conditions to support the tariff strategy launched by the Institute.

Despite this initiative, the same private generators have presented opposition to the conditions promoted by the Institute, whose objective is to establish the cheapest rates for end customers, both residential and commercial and industrial. ICE would require this energy for the summer, but the response from private producers has not been as expected.

In order to make the transactions effective, the price to be paid must be less than that offered by the Institute's plants, and also less than the price that ICE can import electricity -at that time- from the Regional Electricity Market (MER) or from thermal generation. This will enable the country to have the lowest cost options.

The purchase figure –based on Executive Decree 43,700-MINAE of September 2022– provides the Institute with greater flexibility, since the transactions are opportunity and not for a specific period, an aspect that is adapted to the needs of the National Electric System ( SEN).
