Jamaican govt to launch second phase of Tablets in Schools initiative
The Jamaican government plans to allocate 2.1bn Jamaican dollars (US$16.5mn) to the second phase of the Tablets in Schools program over the next three years, announced Ruel Reid, minister of education, youth and information.
Reid explained that the main goal is to ensure that there is adequate ICT in the country's schools, especially at the early-childhood and primary levels, where students can have critical early interaction with technology.
"We are spending about 700mn [Jamaican dollars] per year, which should take us about three years or less to complete this initiative. This should cover all the primary schools. The high schools are already benefiting from the e-Learning project," Reid was quoted as saying by JIS News.
According to the minister, approximately 221 primary and infant schools will benefit during the first year of the second phase, with teachers' colleges scheduled to come onstream soon.
Under the pilot program, which was implemented two years ago, computer tablets were distributed to approximately 24,000 students and 1,200 teachers. JIS News reported that the second phase of the program will differ from the pilot project, as there will now be one tablet per classroom as opposed to students receiving their own devices.
