Mexico confirms nearly US$300mn for 2 new hospitals

Mexico’s social security agency for state workers, ISSSTE, has received approval of 5.6bn pesos (US$288mn) in federal financing to build two hospitals in Tamaulipas and Coahuila states.
The funds will be allocated in 2022-24, records on the finance ministry’s investment portfolio show.
The first project involves replacing the general hospital in Tampico in Tamaulipas state with a 150-bed facility that ISSSTE estimated needs 2.4bn pesos. The second project seeks to replace the Dr Francisco Galindo Chávez general hospital in Coahuila’s Torreón city with a new 3.2bn-peso, 250-bed facility.
The 50-year-old Tampico general hospital is operating at overcapacity while the Torreón hospital is 58 years old and has exceeded its lifespan, ISSSTE said in the cost-benefit analyses for each project.
No construction tenders have been launched but the addition of the projects to the ministry’s portfolio signals they could be moving forward soon.
