Mexico mining output up with sulfur growing strongly

Mexico’s mining output grew in February, as sulfur production surged.

Overall production was up 0.8%, compared with the same month last year, following a 2.5% rise registered in January, according to data from statistics agency Inegi.

In February, sulfur output jumped 64.7% to 27,319t, with iron pellet production up 6.4% to 485,759t, and non-coking coal rising 5.6% to 357,374t.

Gold production was up 3.6% at 6,980kg (224,000oz), with zinc increasing 3.3% at 31,081t.

Copper production was down 1.7% at 40,141t, with silver falling 1.9% at 343,299kg.

Gypsum and fluorspar registered declines of 2% and 2.7%, respectively, to 506,969t and 79,737t, with lead down 4% to 14,130t and coke dropping 13.8% to 37,047t.

In the first two months of the year, overall mining output was up 1.7%.

Mexico is the world’s largest silver producer and a top 10 miner of gold, copper, lead and zinc.
