Mexico pushes back transmission line tender by 2 weeks

Mexico's energy ministry has pushed back bidding on the 1500MW, 700km Baja California transmission line from September 28 to October 12.

The move comes a short time after publishing of the tender terms was also postponed from August 31 to September 7.

Seven companies have prequalified in the bidding process for the US$1.1bn transmission line: a consortium formed by Infraestructura Energética Nova, Ienova Renewable Holding and Manitoba Hydro International; Iberdrola México acting alone; a consortium between Sterlite Power Grid Ventures and RTE International; China Electric Power Equipment and Technology as a sole bidder; a consortium formed by China Electric Power Equipment and Technology and CET Electric; a consortium of China Energy Engineering, Omega Corp and Adani Transmission; and a consortium of Riverstone Transmission Mexico, B&MCD Engineering and Atco Servicios y Energia.

According to energy ministry information, 109 companies have expressed their interest in participating in this tender, which involves the construction of a transmission line connecting Mexico's national electricity grid to Baja California state.

The benefits of the line include the reduction in generation costs, improvement of operations of the system in Baja California state, which is currently isolated from the national grid, and the modernization of the grid in that state.
