Mexico replaces environment minister

Mexican President Andrés López Obrador has named Víctor Manuel Toledo (pictured) as the new head of the country’s environment ministry Semarnat, after Josefa González-Blanco resigned at the weekend.

On Saturday, González-Blanco said she had decided to resign after it was reported that she caused a commercial flight to be significantly delayed due to arriving late at the airport.

“There’s no justification. The real transformation of Mexico requires total adherence to the principles of equality and justice. No one can have privileges,” she wrote in a resignation letter published on her Twitter account.

During his daily press conference, López-Obrador said that Toledo is one of Mexico’s best social scientists and one of the country’s top environmentalists.
