Mexico steps up pandemic crisis connectivity efforts

Mexico’s communications and transport ministry (SCT) will coordinate the health ministry’s guidelines to ensure citizens have access to connectivity in the light of the coronavirus outbreak.

Freight association Conacar has asked SCT to also take the reins in ensuring adequate supply and distribution of basic goods and medical supplies throughout the country, daily El Economista reported on Friday.

SCT and Conacar have agreed to avoid as much human interaction as possible on toll roads, the ministry said in a statement on Friday.

Although the ministry stopped being the country’s telecommunications regulator in 2013, when watchdog IFT was created, it still oversees the nation’s infrastructure.

Alongside IFT, other federal agencies and key players in the telecom industry, SCT agreed to a series of measures to keep telecommunication services efficient throughout the pandemic crisis. These include mass text message alerts and other free services.
