Radiográfica Costarricense (Racsa), which belongs to Costa Rica's state-owned telecom ICE, continues banking on its MVNO Fullmóvil, despite a decrease in its market share.

Fullmóvil currently has 32,345 active lines, which represent 1% of the Costa Rican market, down from 2% in 2013.

Racsa acquired Fullmóvil in 2014 from the company Virtualis S.A. Fullmóvil works on ICE's infrastructure, and offers voice and data services.

América Móvil's MVNO in the US, Tracfone, has announced the launch of Total Wireless, a sister virtual operator that runs on Verizon's infrastructure.

Total Wireless will focus exclusively on multi-line plans and data-sharing for families as a competitive response for Virgin Mobile's plan "Data Done Right."

Tracfone, which as of September 2014 had 25.9mn subscribers in the US, a 12.47% increase from the previous year, was recently fined US$40mn by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) for deceiving consumers with non-existent unlimited data services.

Colombian MVNOs grew 250% during 2014, according to a report by El Tiempo.

Uff Móvil, Virgin Mobile Colombia and Almacenes Éxito Inversiones, the three virtual operators in the country, had a combined 2.8mn subscribers by the end of last year, up from 807,000 in 2013.

That number represents 5% of the total telecoms market in Colombia.

However, two previous virtual operators, UNE and ETB, left the market, which could affect the performance of the sector moving forward.
