MVNOs represent less than 1% of Mexican mobile market
Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs) still represent less than 1% of the mobile telephony market in Mexico, a Telefónica representative said during the MVNO Industry Summit Latam 2015 in Mexico City.
Boris Velandia, wholesale business manager for Telefónica, said that MVNOs have a small percentage of mobile subscribers in the country, though he expects this will grow to 3% in the next five years.
However, Mexican MVNOs have yet to achieve the significance they have in other markets. "In some countries they reach 5% of the market, in Europe it goes up to 30%," he said.
Despite their shortcomings, Mexico's largest telecoms companies are planning to add between six and eight new MVNOs to their networks this year.
Telefónica, which currently operates several MVNOs, is contemplating adding between three and five operators, according to Velandia.
One of the new ones will be supermarket chain Chedraui, which signed an agreement with Telefónica late last year.
América Móvil is planning to add three MVNOs: Elektra, Axtel and Maxcom.
Axtel signed up with the preponderant agent earlier this month, after settling a lengthy dispute over interconnection points. Maxcom announced the agreement with América Móvil on Tuesday.
MVNOs might receive an extra boost in the years to come. According to watchdog IFT, Mexico's planned shared network will help virtual operators compete on an even footing with traditional carriers, which could help them conquer larger shares of the market.
