New entrant receives fixed line concession

Ecuador gained a new fixed-line operator on Monday when the shareholders of Guayaquil-based startup Linkotel signed a contract with telecoms regulator Conatel for a 15-year fixed telephony concession, Ecuadorian press reported. Linkotel will offer fixed telephony services in areas not served by Pacifictel, the state fixed line operator for Ecuador's Pacific coast region. The company's immediate plans are to install phone booths along three rural routes leading out of Guayaquil. The phone booths are expected to be up and running by March 2003, and will serve about 15,000 people. Linkotel is assembling a workforce of 65-70 persons and expects to receive an initial investment in the form of a US$1.5mn loan from a Guayaquil real estate company. The company's shareholders are chairman Pablo Baquerizo Davila and CEO Diego Torres.
