Kingston, Jamaica. – Nokia today announced that it has been selected by Kingston Freeport Terminal Limited (KFTL) to deploy the first private wireless network at a port in the Caribbean, at its container terminal. The network will be deployed with the support of Nokia partner EGC International

KFTL is a modern and competitive transshipment port serving the Central America and Caribbean region, as well as major markets on the east coast of North America and South America, and facilitating post-Panama vessels transiting the Panama Canal. KFTL's Digital Transformation process has become a benchmark in the Americas due to the adoption of new technologies such as the Nokia DAC (Digital Automation Cloud) and Nokia MXIE, a high-performance end-to-end wireless and industrial digitalization private network platform. Both technologies will be deployed at KFTL to deliver industrial-grade connectivity and edge computing capabilities.

Nokia 's solution will enable KFTL to meet the growing demands of modern logistics, improve safety measures and strengthen overall productivity with world-class wireless connectivity at docks and port yards.

Use cases include critical communications support for the Terminal Operation System (TOS) and other operational systems and applications, connectivity for more than 100 VMTs (Vehicle Mounted Terminals), cranes and trucks, as well as the implementation of more than 100 tablets and 260 devices (Push-to-Talk over LTE) for staff. In the near future, up to 1,300 devices will be connected and remote operation and real-time monitoring of terminal equipment will be enabled.

Marcelo Entreconti, Director of Nokia Enterprise for LatinAmerica said: "We are very pleased to collaborate with KFTL to increase their regional competitiveness. Nokia solutions are key enablers for productivity, efficiency and improvements in operational security. As the first private wireless network project in a Caribbean port, this implementation will benefit KFTL's digitalization journey."

Carlos Cabrera, Chief Operating Officer of KFTL, said: “We seek to go beyond our customers' expectations when delivering our services. We are committed to continually improving our operations safely and keeping innovation as part of our DNA. “Nokia’s private LTE and 5G network is a key component of KFTL’s strategy to drive productivity and security at the edge.”

Victor Agnellini, CEO of EGC International, said: "We are excited to join forces with Nokia to usher in a new era of connectivity at KFTL. Our commitment to innovation aligns perfectly with Nokia's reputation for cutting-edge networking solutions. This partnership will empower the terminal with advanced technology, optimizing operations and ensuring seamless communication for all stakeholders.”

Nokia's Industrial Grade Wireless Private Networks provide more pervasive broadband connectivity, with lower latency, greater predictability and security than alternative solutions, and for this reason they are being selected by various industries as the backbone of digital transformation projects. According to a recent study conducted by Nokia and GlobalData among 79 multinationals that have implemented Nokia Industrial Grade Private Wireless Networks, almost 80 percent of respondents expected to achieve a return on investment (ROI) in the first six months after the implementation.

Nokia has deployed mission-critical networks for more than 2,600 enterprise customers across multiple industries. Nokia has also deployed 635 Private Wireless Networks in companies across multiple sectors.
