Oil major Total buys Brazilian solar plants

French oil major Total has acquired the solar power plants Dracena I, Dracena II and Dracena IV, all located in São Paulo state in southwest Brazil.

The units have a total generation capacity of 90MW and were controlled by Spanish firm Cobra. The deal was carried out through Total the subsidiary Eren and received approval from Brazil's antitrust regulator Cade on Monday.

Total already had 40MW of future solar power capacity in Brazil in two units, the BJL11 and BJL4 plants, both under construction in Bahia state at the moment.

The French firm is not the first oil major to invest in renewables in Brazil. Last year, Equinor (formerly Statoil) acquired a 40% stake in the 162MW Apodi solar park in Ceará state.
