Paraguay, Brazil to kick off binational bridge construction

Brazil‘s Jair Bolsonaro and Paraguay’s Mario Abdo will kick off on May 10 construction of the second bridge connecting both countries.

Binational hydroelectric operator Itaipu will finance the US$84mn infrastructure.

Itaipu has already approved the financing schedule for the 760m four-lane bridge, which will connect the cities of Presidente Franco (Alto Paraná department in Paraguay) and Foz de Yguazú (Paraná state in Brazil).

Once the new bridge is complete, the existing one, connecting Ciudad del Este and Foz de Yguazú, will be open for light traffic only.

Meanwhile, Itaipu’s Paraguay director José Alderete told Paraguayan daily Última Hora that the complementary works will cost US$150mn and be contracted to local firms.

The bridge will be built by Brazilian consortium Construbase-Cidade-Paulitec.

Itaipu will also finance a third bridge between the countries, across the Paraguay river. It is estimated to cost US$75mn, Alderete said.
