Pemex to seek shale, deepwater partners
Mexico's Pemex will seek partners to develop shale, deepwater and other challenging fields such as the Chicontepec basin, said head of exploration and production Gustavo Hernández.
Mexico has probable deepwater and non-conventional reserves of 88Bb of crude or equivalent, representing 70% of the country's total potential reserves, said Hernández in a conference call on Friday.
During the so-called round zero, Pemex asked to keep 69% of deepwater and non-conventional reserves in order to award contracts to third parties and participate as a partner.
Pemex will first seek to develop onshore and shallow-water fields in the Gulf of Mexico, where it has the experience and infrastructure investment, aiming to maintain its US$7/b production cost and US$95-105/b spot market sales price.
Partnerships will not be explored until the end of round zero, according to the energy ministry's hydrocarbons under secretary Lourdes Melgar.
The energy ministry has until September 17 to evaluate what fields it will assign Pemex, which asked to keep 83% of the country's proved and probable (2P) reserves, as well as 31% of its prospective hydrocarbon resources.
BNamericas will host its second annual Mexico Energy Summit in Mexico City on May 21-22. Click here to download the agenda.
