Peru receives petition against Shahuindo gold-silver project EIS

Peru's energy and mines ministry ( MEM) has received a petition requesting the annulment of Toronto-based Sulliden Gold's (TSK & BVL: SUE, Pink Sheets: SDDDF) environmental impact study (EIS) of its US$132mn Shahuindo gold-silver project. The petition, brought by social organizations from Peru's Condebamba valley, in the northern Andean region of Cajamarca, argues that there has been a low level of participation of the population in the area of influence of the mining project, since Sulliden selected the people allowed in the workshops, Cajamarca's government said on its website. "The workshops failed to provide information, establish a dialog and learn about the perceptions and interests of the population with regard to the mining project," the petition states. In addition, the petition argues that Sulliden's EIS does not include a detailed hydrogeological study considering all the basins in the area of influence, and that there are no guarantees of a sustained water supply for local communities. Additional arguments against the project's EIS include the lack of geotechnical studies that guarantee the construction of enduring infrastructure and the absence of treatment methods for acid water from the mine. The Shahuindo project, which is slated to produce 84,500oz/y, is in the same region as Newmont Mining's (NYSE: NEM) US$4.8bn Minas Conga copper-gold project which has also faced community opposition. Mine development at Conga was suspended in November 2011 due to increasingly violent protests. Since then, Newmont has been moving forward with a 'water-first' approach and is building four reservoirs, the first of which was completed in July this year. Cajamarca regional president Gregorio Santos has been one of the main opponents of Minas Conga.
