Petrobras to drill over 20 exploration wells by end-2022

Petrobras plans to drill over 20 offshore exploration wells in new reservoirs by the end of 2022, the Brazilian oil company’s E&P director, Fernando Borges, told a press conference on Thursday.

Eleven will be sunk in the Campos basin, bordering the pre-salt polygon, which encompasses areas contracted under the production sharing framework such as Libra

Another eight wells, also reaching the pre-salt, will be drilled in the Santos (six) and Espírito Santo (two) basins.

Two other wells are scheduled to be spudded in Brazil’s equatorial margin, where Petrobras operates blocks in the Foz do Amazonas, Barreirinhas, Pará-Maranhão and Potiguar basins.

“We have blocks on the border with Guyana, 160km off the coast, on the same trend as the discoveries in Guyana and Suriname. If we’re successful in this drilling, we could drill more wells in the six blocks we have there,” Borges said.

He added that by 2025 up to eight wells are planned to be drilled in the equatorial margin, requiring US$1bn in investment.

The drilling campaigns depend, however, on obtaining environmental licenses from regulator Ibama. So far, state-owned Petrobras has authorization to drill in the area of its Pitu discovery, off Rio Grande do Norte state’s coast (Potiguar basin).

Fernando Borges said Petrobras has 21 production units scheduled for maintenance stoppages by year-end, totaling 38 in 2021.

"This compromises around 5% of our production, which is normal. It’s part of our routine to take care of the physical integrity of all the units."
