Continuous rain during Thursday exceeded Valle de México's drainage capacity, causing floods along various segments of Mexico state's Circuito Exterior Mexiquense tollroad, according to water authority Conagua.
Canal General, Valle de México's main drainage system, includes two pumping stations which were put under great strain following the heavy rainfall.
A series of projects to improve drainage in the valley are currently underway, including the construction of the Churubusco-Xochiaca drainage tunnel.
ICA, in association with its subsidiary Construcciones y Trituraciones, won the contract to build the tunnel with a bid of 2.57bn pesos (US$197mn). Earlier this year, it won a tender for construction of the Canal General drainage tunnel with a bid of 1.14bn pesos.
