Pucobre opens solar plant in northern Chile
Chilean copper producer Pucobre and power company AES Gener opened a 3MW photovoltaic plant to supply the San José concentrator in Tierra Amarilla in northern Atacama region, the mining ministry reported.
The PV plant required US$3mn and is built on an old tailings dam that Pucobre stopped operating in 2014 and adds to an agreement the company has with Guacolda Energía for 150GWh/y of renewable energy to power operations at its Punta del Cobre, Manto Cobre and Granate mines.
Pucobre has reduced its carbon footprint by 70% since it adopted entirely renewable sources in 2021, according to its latest annual report.
The mid-sized mining company expects production of 27,700t of fine copper this year.
